‘Doctor Bahu’ puts women’s careers vs domestic expectations under the microscope

Pakistan’s newest drama Doctor Bahu premiered on March 27 and has already received a positive response from viewers. The lead actors, Kubra Khan and Shuja Asad, come together for the first time in a story centered on Dr Fajr, an accomplished doctor who married into a traditional family.

The drama explores several pressing societal issues in Pakistan, particularly those surrounding women’s marriages and their professional aspirations. Fajr, who comes from a prestigious, medically acclaimed family, finds herself in a home where she is no longer permitted to practice medicine despite her qualifications and achievements.

The central conflict arises following Fajr’s marriage to the youngest son of the family, when unspoken patriarchal expectations begin to surface. Although her career and status were initially valued during proposals, Fajr is subsequently expected to prioritise domestic responsibilities. This contrast highlights the irony in societal attitudes, where women are celebrated for their success yet often restricted after marriage.

The opening episode also features dramatic moments including the couple’s troublesome marriage and an incident in which Fajr’s aunt takes a bullet intended for the main character Salman, who is played by Shuja Asad.

Fans had positive reactions to the first episode, sharing their excitement for the drama’s aim in shining light on domestic issues regarding women in the medical field.

The audience also pointed out sexism and inequality in the workplace, arguing that being a male doctor is more rewarded.

While the drama has received positive remarks so far, many commented on the prominent age gap in the casting, suggesting that Khan and Shuja do not make a good match.

For the most part, long-time fans were just happy to see familiar faces on screen again.

The cast includes notable names such as Saba Hamid, among others, many of whom previously appeared in the popular drama Noor Jahan. Adeel Hussain has also returned back to acting after a break, playing Dr Faizan in the series.

With a strong debut, Doctor Bahu has sparked important conversations while delivering engaging storytelling.
