Nadia Jamil appeals to CM Maryam to act on animal abuse in Punjab

Pakistani actor Nadia Jamil urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take meaningful action to stop animal cruelty in the province, highlighting that it is as important an issue alongside her broader efforts to protect and support children.

In a letter, co-written by Jamil and actress Uzma Hassan, they emphasized that it is widely recognized that animal cruelty often leads to increased violence within society.

The public document was shared on social media.

Jamil stated, “Please sign and circulate this petition. Tag @maryamnawazofficial and help it reach the Chief Minister’s Office”.

She further went on to say that “Cruelty in society never stays isolated. When violence becomes normal, children grow up believing it is normal. The way we treat animals reflects the values we are teaching the next generation”.

The document noted that Pakistan, having signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, is obligated to safeguard children from psychological harm, which includes exposure to cruelty against animals.

It was further highlighted that in 2023, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child addressed the link between children’s rights and the environment, stressing that children should be protected from all kinds of physical and emotional harm, including domestic abuse towards animals.

Her statement also points out that individuals who mistreat animals may be dealing with unresolved psychological issues that can later contribute to domestic violence. In addition, it notes that the mistreatment of wild and exotic animals in Pakistan is increasing and causing them significant stress.

The appeal concluded by expressing trust in the chief minister’s dedication to creating a safer and more compassionate Punjab, while emphasizing that ““A society that safeguards its most vulnerable — whether children or animals — builds stronger moral foundations for future generations.”

The actor is not the first to raise concerns about animal rights with Maryam. Earlier in February, actor Ushna Shah also wrote to her, acknowledging her efforts but urging greater attention to animal welfare.

Similarly, Zhalay Sarhadi spoke out in support of stronger protections of animals buried under debris, during the rushed demolition of a pet market near Lahore’s Data Darbar.

Together, these voices reflect growing concern within Pakistan’s entertainment industry over the treatment of animals, adding pressure on the CM to enforce policies that ensure better protection of animals and communities.
