The plane’s wreckage was found 24 hours later; 10 people were killed, including the vice president of Malawi
Lilongwe: Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has announced that the wreckage of the vice president’s missing small military plane has been found in a dense forest in the highlands after a continuous 24-hour search.
According to the World News Agency, 7 passengers and 3 military personnel were on board the plane. Burnt bodies of all 10 people were found in the wreckage of the plane and were shifted to a nearby hospital.
The plane of the vice president of the African country of Malawi, Saulo Klaus, went missing yesterday, the wreckage of which was found in a mountain forest in the northern region.
The aircraft involved in the accident was a Dornier 228 twin-propeller aircraft that was delivered to the Malawian military in 1988 and is still in use by the military.
The funeral arrangements for those who died in the accident will be announced soon.
In the plane, the Vice President along with 9 other people were going to Mizzo to attend the funeral of a former government minister. However, after a 45-minute flight, the plane disappeared about 370 kilometers (230 miles) north of the capital, Lilongwe.
Malawi’s president says air traffic controllers told the plane to turn back, instructing it not to attempt a landing at Mizu Airport due to bad weather.
Due to bad weather, instead of rescue planes and helicopters, the search for the plane was started by land route, in which 200 soldiers, 300 policemen and 600 forest rangers participated.
Earlier, the Malawian president said that various countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Norway and Israel had been contacted to search for the plane, which had offered cooperation “in various capacities” for the plane search operation.
It should be recalled that the 51-year-old Malawian Vice President Dr. Saulus Klaus Chilema was on his way to the plane to attend the burial of former government minister Ralph Kasambara. In which 10 high-ranking officials including the former first lady Chanel Zambri were on board.
The plane took off from the capital Lilongwe on Monday morning and lost contact with the control tower 45 minutes later
