Floods wreak havoc in Sri Lanka; 7 elephants and 14 people killed
Colombo: Heavy rains in Sri Lanka turned into floods, during which 14 people were killed in mudslides and falling trees.
According to the World News Agency, the monsoon rains and storms caused havoc in the islands of Sri Lanka. In 20 out of 25 districts, the system of life was disrupted.
Wildlife officials have found 7 dead bodies of young elephants that were swept away by the floods. This is the highest number of elephants killed in an accident or disaster in the last 5 years.
Near the capital Colombo, 3 members of the same family drowned in the flood, while 9 people were crushed by falling trees.
Similarly, due to the fall of the mudslide, several people were buried in the debris, out of which an 11-year-old girl and a 20-year-old boy were killed.
Others, including an 11-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man, were buried alive in the mudslide, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said.
Flights arriving at Colombo’s main international airport are being diverted to another airport.
The government has ordered the closure of all schools after the Meteorological Department predicted heavy rains with thunder for the next few days
