PM Shehbaz vows crackdown against corrupt elements in power distribution companies

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has vowed to take strict action against corrupt elements within power distribution companies, emphasising the government’s commitment to curbing electricity theft, reducing line losses, and improving the power distribution system.

During a review meeting on energy sector reforms at the Prime Minister’s House, the premier directed federal and provincial authorities to adopt a comprehensive approach to tackle electricity theft.

The prime minister highlighted that new board chairman and members have recently been appointed to five power distribution companies through a transparent process.

He expressed confidence that these appointments would enhance the performance of the distribution companies (DISCOs).

PM Shehbaz also instructed the federal minister for power and the federal secretary for power to visit all provinces to monitor the performance of power distribution companies and engage with provincial governments.

He called for an increase in the number of police personnel and tehsildars as required by the DISCOs to aid in the fight against electricity theft.

Furthermore, the premier ordered the immediate convening of a steering committee meeting to discuss the transition of agricultural tube wells in Balochistan to solar power.

The meeting was informed that standard operating procedures (SOPs) and notifications for this initiative have been issued.

The prime minister also stressed the importance of making the public grievance redressal system in distribution companies more effective and result-oriented.
