Tehran: Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered his name for the presidential election scheduled for June 28 after the death of Ibrahim Raisi.
According to the Reuters news agency, Iran’s state broadcaster reported that former hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has also registered for the presidential election.
The final list of presidential candidates will be released on June 11 and Ahmadinejad’s name may be withheld by the council.
It should be remembered that Ahmadinejad, a former member of the Revolutionary Guards, was first elected as the president of Iran in 2005 and resigned after completing his term in 2013.
Later in 2017, he was barred by the council and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei warned that joining the presidential race was neither in his interest nor in the country’s interest.
Ahmadinejad’s objection to Ayatollah Khamenei’s authority led to disagreements, and in 2018, Ahmadinejad criticized the Supreme Leader and called for free elections.
