Spain, however, raised the tempo in the second period and began to create openings around the German circle.

Borja Lacalle came closest to breaking the deadlock when he unleashed an angled reverse-stick effort midway through the quarter, but Germany goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg reacted superbly to keep the shot out with his glove.

Danneberg was called upon several more times before the interval, but the German defence held firm and the teams went into halftime level at 0-0.

Spain continued to press after the restart, dominating possession and repeatedly threatening the German circle. Yet despite their territorial advantage, the Red Sticks were unable to find a decisive touch.

Germany needed only one opportunity in the third quarter to change the game.

With 80 seconds remaining in the period, Michel Struthoff made a determined run across the face of goal and finished into an empty net after the Spanish goalkeeper committed early, handing Germany a 1-0 lead from their only circle entry of the quarter.

Spain responded by throwing more players forward and continued to accumulate circle entries and chances, but Germany’s defence repeatedly denied them a clear route to goal.

With just under four minutes remaining, Spain removed their goalkeeper in an effort to create an extra attacking player. The move produced further pressure and penalty-corner opportunities, but Germany refused to yield.

The final whistle confirmed Germany’s fourth World Cup triumph and another successful defence of their crown.

Christopher Ruhr was named Player of the Match and said Germany would make the most of their achievement.

“It means much more than anything else,” Ruhr said. “Everyone said, ‘Ah, the Germans this year, nah, they won’t be there.’ Everyone took it on the other teams, but we showed what we’re capable of and played an amazing German competition.”

Ruhr acknowledged the quality of Spain’s performance and the fine margins that decided the final.

“It was unbelievably tough. I think Spain played a hell of a tournament. We always struggle against Spain. They are a tough side, and they played a really good game today, and we had the luckier end.”

Earlier, Argentina stunned the Netherlands 2-1 in the bronze medal match to secure only the second men’s Hockey World Cup medal in their history.

The Netherlands made the stronger start and controlled much of the early possession, but Argentina’s defence remained organised and limited the Dutch to few clear chances.

Neither side could break the deadlock before halftime, but Argentina emerged with greater attacking intent after the interval and took the lead in the 41st minute.

A powerful strike from the 23-metre line found Tomas Domene unmarked in front of goal, and he produced a deft one-handed deflection to put Argentina 1-0 ahead.

The Netherlands were dealt another setback five minutes later when Jorrit Croon received a 10-minute yellow card after accidentally catching an Argentine player in the face with his stick.

The Dutch responded strongly despite being a player down and eventually found an equaliser in the 49th minute. From their second penalty corner of the match, Jip Janssen played a variation to Floris Middendorp, who finished to make it 1-1.

The Netherlands thought they had taken the lead with seven minutes remaining, but the goal was ruled out for danger.

Argentina capitalised on the reprieve.

In the 59th minute, veteran Matias Rey, 41, converted from a penalty corner after the initial effort had been charged down, restoring Argentina’s lead and putting them within touching distance of the podium.

The Netherlands removed their goalkeeper in the final stages and earned a series of penalty corners as they searched desperately for an equaliser.

Argentina held their nerve, however, and saw out the closing seconds to secure a historic bronze medal.

Tomas Ruiz, named Player of the Match, said the achievement carried special significance for Argentina.

“It is amazing. We wrote history for our country. It’s the second medal in the history. So we are happy, and we have to celebrate,” Ruiz said.

Germany retained the men’s Hockey World Cup title on Sunday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Spain, becoming the first team to win back-to-back titles on two separate occasions and claiming their fourth world crown.
