{"id":5026,"date":"2026-08-25T06:23:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T06:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistantimesusa.net\/?p=5026"},"modified":"2026-08-25T06:23:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T06:23:03","slug":"oil-steadies-as-investors-weigh-impact-of-latest-us-sanctions-on-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistantimesusa.net\/?p=5026","title":{"rendered":"Oil steadies as investors weigh impact of latest US sanctions on Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oil prices recovered ground on \u200bTuesday after settling down more than 2% in the previous session, with investors assessing the impact of \u200cthe latest US\u00a0sanctions against Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude futures rose 27 cents, or 0.3%, to $92.44 a barrel, while US\u00a0West Texas Intermediate crude was up 37 cents, or 0.4%, at $85.38.<\/p>\n<p>Both contracts settled lower on Monday, with US\u00a0crude oil falling to a one-week low on profit-taking after prices rallied over the previous two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The market seems largely unfazed by Washington&#8217;s push for tighter \u200beconomic pressure on Iran, with traders treating the US\u00a0effort to nudge partners away from Iranian \u2060trade as marginal rather than market moving,&#8221; said ING commodity strategists in a note on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>US\u00a0Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent \u200bon Monday\u00a0unveiled\u00a0an expansion of sanctions to cut off Iran&#8217;s economic lifeline, to force an end to the war between \u200bthem, telling countries they would need to sever their business ties or risk being cut out of the dollar-based financial system.<\/p>\n<p>However, he declined to identify the countries that would be targeted or reveal when those penalties would take effect, saying he would instead provide them time to comply \u200bwith the new directive.<\/p>\n<p>While US\u00a0Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Monday the US\u00a0would not rule out using military force \u200bagainst Iran, the country is turning towards more economic coercion, which analysts said removed concerns about threats to Middle Eastern oil supply because \u200cof \u2060the war.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2625634\/govt-raises-petrol-price-by-39-paisas-hsd-by-rs240-per-litre-for-aug-25\" rel=\"nofollow\">Govt raises petrol price by 39 paisas, HSD by Rs2.40 per litre for Aug 25<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Markets appear to be pricing economic pressure as a lower-risk path for physical supply than kinetic action, which is why the initial reaction was for oil to move lower rather than spike higher,&#8221; said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM.<\/p>\n<p>However, he warned, &#8220;Iran still retains the ability to respond by disrupting shipping, which continues to keep a residual premium in the oil \u200bprice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting those threats, an oil \u200btanker was struck on Tuesday \u2060by an unidentified projectile and disabled about 9 nautical miles (16.7 km) northeast of Oman&#8217;s Ash Shishah, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said.<\/p>\n<p>Iran is still maintaining it should have control over \u200bthe key Strait of Hormuz, which before the war started in February typically carried cargoes \u200bequal to about \u206020% of global oil use.
