{"id":4902,"date":"2026-08-23T07:10:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T07:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistantimesusa.net\/?p=4902"},"modified":"2026-08-23T07:10:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T07:10:50","slug":"canada-to-impose-retaliatory-tariffs-across-a-raft-of-us-sectors-carney-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistantimesusa.net\/?p=4902","title":{"rendered":"Canada to impose retaliatory tariffs across a raft of US sectors, Carney says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada&#8217;s Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Saturday \u200bthat starting September 8, his administration\u00a0would impose tariffs on imports from \u200cthe United States across a raft of sectors in retaliation for President Donald Trump&#8217;s new 50% tariffs that came into effect at midnight.<\/p>\n<p>After \u200bdays of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/top-canada-us-trade-negotiators-meet-again-deal-deadline-nears-2026-08-20\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">intense negotiations<\/a>, the two countries failed to \u200breach a trade deal late on Friday, worsening an already delicate relationship \u2060between the two long-term trade partners and allies and \u200bcomplicating the future of a highly successful continental free trade pact \u200bcalled the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/mexico-expects-trade-outcomes-similar-emerging-us-canada-deal-2026-08-21\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">US-Mexico-Canada agreement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s new tariffs hit a slew of sectors, including wine, furniture, dairy products, cement, clothing, fishing rods, hockey equipment and \u200bcover some $20 billion of Canadian exports south of the border. \u200bThese duties do not give exemption to Canadian products under the USMCA, \u200cwhich \u2060have shielded most of Canadian exports to the US in the last 18 months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read More:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2625245\/us-hits-canadian-goods-with-50-tariffs-after-trade-talks-fail\" rel=\"nofollow\">US hits Canadian goods with 50% tariffs after trade talks fail<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Canada will match Washington\u2019s new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, \u200band businesses,&#8221; Carney said \u200bat a news \u2060conference.<\/p>\n<p>These retaliatory tariffs will hit sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and \u200bpaper, and electronics and will also include products \u200bcurrently \u2060subject to the unjustified Section 232 and 338 tariffs, Carney said in a spirited speech from the Parliament building in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We \u2060cannot \u200baccept what they have offered, and \u200bwe will not give what they have asked,&#8221; Carney said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump had expressed hope that a deal with Canada could happen on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>But Carney said the US\u00a0administration&#8217;s last-minute demands halted progress.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In recent days, the \u200cUS\u00a0proposed \u2060new terms that were uneconomic, unfair, and undermined the net benefits to Canada, calling into question the reliability of any deal,&#8221; he said, adding that these demands included curtailing Canada&#8217;s ability to forge new trade deals.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said Canada would announce support measures next week for industries that are hit by the new US\u00a0duties, alongside new tariffs on the US.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Bad deal&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new US\u00a0tariffs cover around 5% of Canada&#8217;s exports to \u200bthe US. They could expose \u200bsome vulnerable industries such as softwood \u2060lumber and wine to severe damage and lead to job losses and business closures, trade experts have said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will be mobilising our network of businesses in all regions and all sectors to brace for \u200bimpact and make the best of a bad situation,&#8221; said Candace Laing, CEO of the Canadian Chamber \u200bof Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario Premier \u2060Doug Ford, one of the most vocal opponents of US\u00a0tariffs, supported Carney&#8217;s decision to retaliate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m glad he didn&#8217;t sign that deal because it was a bad deal. It was a bad deal for Ontario.
