{"id":4752,"date":"2026-08-09T16:09:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-09T16:09:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistantimesusa.net\/?p=4752"},"modified":"2026-08-09T16:09:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T16:09:24","slug":"govt-rejects-afghan-taliban-claim-of-weapons-smuggling-calls-allegation-baseless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistantimesusa.net\/?p=4752","title":{"rendered":"Govt rejects Afghan Taliban claim of weapons smuggling, calls allegation \u2018baseless\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Sunday rejected the Afghan Taliban government\u2019s claim that weapons were being smuggled from Pakistan into Afghanistan for \u201csubversive activities\u201d, calling the allegation \u201cfrivolous, baseless and contrary to established facts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted on X, the ministry said Afghanistan was already \u201cawash with enormous quantities of sophisticated weapons and military equipment\u201d left behind following the withdrawal of US and coalition forces.<\/p>\n<p>It said the abandoned equipment was worth an estimated $7.2 billion and was in addition to \u201clarge stocks of Soviet-era weaponry accumulated over decades of conflict\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said attempts to establish a Pakistani connection to such weapons appeared designed to \u201cdivert international attention\u201d from a \u201cfar more serious and documented concern\u201d \u2014 that terrorist groups continued to operate from Afghan soil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTerrorist groups continue to find space, facilitation and operational freedom on Afghan soil to plan, support and execute attacks inside Pakistan,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>Read More:\u00a0Afghan regime poses threat to region, world: DG ISPR<\/p>\n<p>Rather than resorting to \u201cimplausible accusations and blame-shifting\u201d, the ministry said Afghan Taliban authorities should address the presence of \u201cterrorist sanctuaries\u201d on their territory.<\/p>\n<p>It further stated that the authorities also needed to fulfil their \u201crepeated commitments\u201d that Afghan soil would not be allowed to be used for terrorism against Pakistan or any other country.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan has repeatedly pointed to an Afghanistan\u2013India nexus behind terrorism in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2024, Inter-Services Public Relations Director-General Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry had issued a warning that the\u00a0Afghan regime was a threat\u00a0not just to Pakistan but to the entire region and the world, citing the abandonment of $7.2 billion worth of American military equipment during the US withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>Also Read:\u00a0India&#8217;s &#8216;hydro terrorism&#8217; untenable: COAS<\/p>\n<p>Lt Gen Chaudhry reiterated that the Afghan regime was harbouring \u201cNon-State Actors\u201d who posed a threat to various countries in the region, noting the Taliban\u2019s failure to establish an inclusive state and government post-2021. He stressed that Pakistan&#8217;s issue was with the Afghan Taliban regime, not the Afghan people.<\/p>\n<p>After the conflict with India in May 2025, Field Marshal Asim Munir had said that Pakistan would never be coerced, and that\u00a0all inimical designs to derail the\u00a0country&#8217;s counterterrorism efforts would be \u201ccomprehensively defeated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He had said Pakistan\u2019s military remained prepared to respond across the full spectrum of conflict. He particularly criticised India\u2019s growing tendency to resort to unprovoked military aggression, cautioning that strategic stability in South Asia was increasingly fragile and hinged on justice, especially in Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>Read More:\u00a0The breeding ground for terror<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, a\u00a0UN report also revealed\u00a0that the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had established a new base in K-P in mid-2023. The report shed light on close ties not only between the TTP and the Afghan Taliban but also with anti-Pakistani groups and al Qaeda.<\/p>\n<p>The report further revealed that some Taliban members had also joined the TTP, perceiving it as a religious obligation to provide support.<\/p>\n<p>Interlocutors reported that TTP members and their families received regular aid packages from the Taliban.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, the UN report noted a significant increase in Afghan nationals in the TTP ranks.
