Windows were smashed and petrol bombs hurled at former Bangladesh \u200ccricket captain Shakib Al Hasan’s residence after he joined ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina\u2019s first public media interaction since her 2024 removal from power, in which she\u00a0vowed to return\u00a0in December.<\/p>\n
Police said a group of people attacked \u200bShakib\u2019s ancestral home in Magura town, about 170 km (105 miles) southwest of the capital \u200bDhaka, on Wednesday, causing a fire on the upper floor of the residence. \u2060The property was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported.<\/p>\n
Reuters\u00a0was unable to \u200breach Shakib for comment on the attack.<\/p>\n
The attack came hours after Shakib, a former Awami League lawmaker, \u200bjoined a virtual event organised by the Foreign Correspondents\u2019 Club of South Asia in New Delhi. During the audio address, Hasina\u00a0reiterated\u00a0that she would return to Bangladesh, where she has been sentenced to death.<\/p>\n
Shakib, who was \u200belected to parliament as an Awami League candidate in January 2024, has remained outside Bangladesh \u200bsince the student-led uprising that toppled Hasina\u2019s government. He faces multiple investigations, including over allegations of murder, embezzlement, fraud \u200cand money laundering.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will return to my people,\u201d Hasina said. \u201cI know that they may put me in jail or they may kill me, but still I have to go back.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event, held on the second anniversary of her ouster, was Hasina\u2019s first public interaction with the media since she \u200bfled Bangladesh in 2024.<\/p>\n
Hasina\u00a0also \u200bsaid the ban \u2060on the Awami League, the party she led for more than four decades, should be lifted after it was barred from political activity following \u200bher ouster.<\/p>\n
Bangladesh\u2019s foreign ministry condemned Hasina\u2019s media appearance, describing it as \u201can affront \u200bto the \u2060sovereignty of Bangladesh\u201d and warning that allowing her to address the media from India could harm bilateral relations.<\/p>\n
Hasina, 78, has been living in New Delhi since August 2024. Bangladesh has sought her extradition from \u2060India, which \u200bsays the request is being examined under its legal \u200bprocedures.<\/p>\n
In November 2025, the country’s war crimes tribunal sentenced her to death in absentia over the deadly crackdown on the \u200b2024 student-led uprising, charges she has dismissed as politically motivated.<\/p>\n
