\u201cMarilyn is just an icon,\u201d said Brian Chanes, Senior Director of Hollywood and entertainment at Heritage Auctions, during a preview of the collection on Friday. \u201cPeople \u200blove and adore Marilyn to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles in \u200b1926, Monroe became a renowned actress, model, singer and sex symbol known \u2060for her blonde hair and hourglass body. She died in 1962.<\/p>\n

Sale to coincide with birthday<\/p>\n
Heritage \u200bAuctions is opening bidding to the public on items from the estate of poets Norman and \u200bHedda Rosten, close friends and confidants of Monroe. The sale, which happens June 1, coincides with what would have been the star\u2019s 100th birthday and features personal belongings dating from 1955 to 1962.<\/p>\n

Among the most striking offerings \u200bare documents never seen publicly, shedding light on Monroe\u2019s inner life. The papers explore her \u200bromantic relationships, fears surrounding a lost pregnancy, and her reflections on mortality. \u201cIt\u2019s really special because this isn\u2019t material \u200cthat\u2019s \u2060been bought and sold over the decades,\u201d Chanes said. \u201cThis is something that\u2019s a discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the costume jewelry Monroe wore to artwork she once held in her hands, the collection offers buyers intimate access to her personal world. The auction also includes correspondence from her ex-husband, playwright Arthur Miller, \u200brevealing the emotional complexities \u200bof their marriage, as \u2060well as an unseen letter from Monroe\u2019s psychiatrist describing the day leading up to her death.<\/p>\n
Chanes highlighted one particularly emotional piece from the period \u200bwhen Monroe was filming Some Like It Hot. Writing on stationery from \u200bthe Hotel \u2060del Coronado, she pleaded for help as her struggles threatened to derail production.<\/p>\n
\u201cRight before she was about to overdose and they had to halt filming, she wrote, \u2018I feel like I\u2019m drowning,\u2019\u201d Chanes recalled.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou \u2060can feel \u200bthe anguish in her writing,\u201d he added, noting that \u200bMonroe sketched a stick figure submerged in water on the same stationery, begging for help, an image that highlighted the \u200bmental health struggles she faced throughout her career.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
