ICC member states have voted to pursue disciplinary proceedings against Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan after receiving reports \u200bregarding sexual assault allegations against him, two sources briefed on the \u200cmatter told\u00a0Reuters, confirming a Wall Street Journal report.<\/p>\n
In a vote on Wednesday by a core group of member states, 15 voted in favour, two abstained, and four voted \u200bagainst moving forward with the process, said the sources, who spoke on \u200bthe condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n
Khan, who investigates war crimes, crimes against humanity \u2060and genocide, has taken leave of absence pending an inquiry into accusations \u200bof non-consensual sexual interaction with a lawyer in his office. He rejects any \u200ballegations of wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

The International Criminal Court has been thrust into crisis by the investigations into Khan \u2014 its most prominent official \u2014 as well as by US sanctions over the court\u2019s actions, \u200bincluding arrest warrants for Israeli officials for alleged war crimes.<\/p>\n
A report by United \u200bNations investigators found a “factual basis” for the allegations of sexual misconduct made by a female \u200caide\u2060, and that witness accounts “lend support to her claims”, the sources said.<\/p>\n
However, a second report by three judges that analysed the UN report found the evidence insufficient to establish the truth of the allegations “beyond a reasonable doubt”, they said.<\/p>\n
Lawyers for \u200bKhan\u00a0told\u00a0Reuters\u00a0last week \u200bthat the judges \u2060unanimously concluded that the “factual findings do not establish misconduct or breach of duty.”<\/p>\n
A group of African states said disciplinary \u200bproceedings should end, arguing that the judges had exonerated Khan. \u200bBut other \u2060nations, including the court’s biggest backers, voted to continue proceedings.<\/p>\n
Officials from the prosecutor’s office also opposed Khan’s continued service as chief prosecutor in a letter read out \u2060at \u200bWednesday\u2019s meeting.<\/p>\n
