{"id":2739,"date":"2026-03-25T10:10:33","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T10:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pakistantimesusa.net\/?p=2739"},"modified":"2026-03-25T10:10:33","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T10:10:33","slug":"boycott-slams-englands-ashes-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistantimesusa.net\/?p=2739","title":{"rendered":"Boycott slams England&#8217;s Ashes review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Geoffrey Boycott bemoaned a lack of accountability in English cricket after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to retain head coach Brendon \u200cMcCullum and managing director Rob Key following a review of the team\u2019s humbling 4\u20131 Ashes defeat in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The former England opener questioned ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould\u2019s credentials and said the \u201cincompetent\u201d Key and McCullum had \u201csabotaged\u201d England\u2019s Ashes campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The 4\u20131 defeat in Australia exposed significant weaknesses in England\u2019s approach, with inconsistent batting displays, ineffective bowling strategies and questionable team selections contributing to one of their most disappointing Ashes campaigns in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike me, cricket supporters will be asking how McCullum and Key could make so many bad decisions on the Australian tour and yet the chief executive of \u2060English cricket decides there is no need to make any changes. Where is the accountability?\u201d Boycott wrote in the Telegraph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure they promised him they would do better, but leopards don\u2019t change their spots, so it looks like we will get the same type of test cricket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boycott said he admired McCullum for getting the team to play aggressive and exciting cricket but felt the players had grown complacent under the former New Zealand captain.<\/p>\n<p>He added that England\u2019s decision-making lacked clarity and direction throughout the tour, with frequent tactical errors and an inability to adapt to Australian conditions raising serious concerns about the leadership\u2019s competence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn trying to create a free-spirited team, he has made them too comfortable and complacent. They know they will not get dropped, whatever their performances or conduct on or off the \u200cfield.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt \u2060looks like a boys\u2019 club where, once you are in the team, it is hard to get out\u2026 Competition for places is the lifeblood of sport. Complacency in a team does not breed a good appetite to excel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Lucky to Survive\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Former England captains Michael Vaughan and Mike Atherton said Key and McCullum were lucky to retain their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s \u2060not many management groups that deliver something so poor away from home in an Ashes series and get the chance to carry on,\u201d Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve had some exciting times, but they haven\u2019t won enough. \u2060What England fans are looking for now is, what change (will happen)?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision to retain the current management has also sparked debate among former players and supporters, many of whom believe a change in leadership was necessary to restore discipline and competitiveness within the squad.<\/p>\n<p>Atherton said English supporters would find \u201cthe lack of accountability hard to stomach\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn most walks of life, such a litany of mistakes would result in \u2060some significant change,\u201d he wrote in the Times.<\/p>\n<p>England will now look ahead to the upcoming international season under increased pressure, with both players and management aware that improved performances will be essential to rebuild confidence and justify the ECB\u2019s decision to maintain continuity<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Geoffrey Boycott bemoaned a lack of accountability in English cricket after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decided to retain head coach Brendon \u200cMcCullum and managing director Rob Key following a review of the team\u2019s humbling 4\u20131 Ashes defeat in Australia.
